UBC Win CanWest 7s Series for 3rd Year in a Row
The UBC Thunderbirds finished the final Women’s Rugby 7’s tournament of the year with a 5-0 record to go unbeaten over the 2025 season and win their third straight Canada West championship Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
The Thunderbirds capped off the unbeaten season with a hard-fought 24-19 win over the Victoria Vikes in the final match of the day.
It was an interesting day of games on the rain-soaked pitch as only the final game between Victoria and UBC did not end in a shutout win for the victorious team.
The Victoria Vikes finished 1-1 on the day to take home second place at 4-1 and a Canada West silver medal, while the Trinity Western Spartans split their matches on the day to finish the tournament at 3-2 to take home their first ever Canada West women’s rugby medal with a third-place bronze medal. The Calgary Dinos claimed fourth place at 2-3, with the Lethbridge Pronghorns in fifth at 1-4 and the Alberta Pandas in sixth at 0-5.
Leading the scoring on the second day were UBC’s Aida Pye with four tries for 20 points, and Skye Farish with two tries and three conversions for 16 points. Victoria’s Olivia Newsome and Calgary’s Sofia Brussoni each finished with two tries and one conversion for 12 points each, while the Vikes Emily Findlay and Ivy Poetker each had two tries for 10 points.
UBC’s Pye led all scorers on the weekend finishing with nine tries and 45 points, with teammate Farish finishing with three tries and nine conversions for 33 points. Victoria’s Elle Douglas was third in scoring on the weekend with two tries and eight conversions for 26 points, with TWU’s Kelsa Kemph finishing fourth with five tries and 25 points.
UBC Head Coach: Darcy Paterson
“The win was awesome, but it was really great to see the level of play rise for the third tournament. And it was really good to have a really solid game against UVIC in the final.”
On getting an undefeated season.
“Pretty special to be undefeated. The Birds put in a lot of work over the season to prepare for that, and that was our goal, and we achieved it, so it was pretty special.”
On a third straight title
“That is also very cool. Three is great. And growing the game of sevens is even better.”
