Bayside RFC in South Surrey is back on the pitch.
Bayside were one of the first rugby clubs to complete the required phase 2 and 3 sanctioning process and have recently conducted a 2 day youth rugby training camp where nearly 40 kids eagerly signed up for the socially distanced rugby skills camp.
ViaSport, the provincial authority on Return to Sport protocol, announced the “Progressively Loosen” stage will start August 24th. “As of August 24, sport activities should adhere to the Progressively Loosen stage of the Sport Activity Chart.”

VICTORIA Children, families and athletes will see their local sport organizations able to continue providing sport programs, thanks to increased support from the Province.

As everyone knows it’s pretty quiet on the rugby front in BC right now, the question is what will happen in September? A lot depends on provincial government health regulations and specifically how ViaSport interprets those for sport through their guidelines.
viaSport which is the province’s voice on Return to Sport guidelines has published a list of Provincial Sport Organizations that have submitted Return to Sport Plans (RTSP).
Yesterday the BC Government made a huge announcement, that they were going to remove one of the roadblocks worrying amateur sport organizers, liability claims based on COVID-19. The BC Government announced that the “Government has created a ministerial order that protects amateur sport organizations, their employees and volunteers from liability.” It’s a first in Canada as far as we know.

[ed. comments below. LATEST UPDATE UBC CONFIRM THEY ARE IN PLAYOFFS. A reporting error by the the BC Rugby Union, where they missed a number, changes the whole news. BCRU reported the score as UBC 7 – Kamloops 19, in actuality they missed a 2, it should have been UBC 72 – Kamloops 19. It sort of makes a difference. Apologies to the UBC Alumni who were getting heart palpitations and google mapping the nearest emergency room.]

It Takes a Village…
This weekend we went more grassroots, we didnt cover the BC Premier match but focused on Div 1, Womens Rugby and U14. Thanks to Pro Fit Sports for the hoodies and Heritage House Trophies for the medals. Here are some of the pics from the weekend. It’s especially rewarding to work with youth rugby and a reminder where it all begins, it takes a community to raise a rugby player.

The Cowichan Piggies and Velox Valhallions meet in probably the biggest game on the Island this year to date. Both clubs have a wealth of talent and feature some of the best young, locally grown players on their rosters.
The USA Eagles prepare for their World Cup qualification matches with Uruguay with a camp in Atlanta this weekend. They meet Uruguay in a home and away series on March 22nd and 29th. An astounding 8 of the 27 play in BC leagues. 6 are with the Div 1 Seattle-OPSB team and 2 with BC Premier team James Bay.
