This is the first year the U20 women’s teams are launching after COVID. They are on a fully pay to play model which has the potential to keep some players out of the pathway at this critical time in their development. That is where the newly started Accelerate Fund has stepped up to help. The fund currently is set up as an annuity looking to raise 2 million by 2025, all the money to go towards supporting Women’s Age Grade Rugby. All funds will be matched up to $500K. There is an upcoming national U20 selection camp at UBC, it is the first time there will be a national age grade XVs assembly for women since 2019.

Venue: Bayside (South Surrey Athletic Park)
The Lomas opened the scoring a few minutes into the match when they found a ruck undefended by UBC and the big #8 Jalan Farris picked the ball up and ran straight ahead. He found #13 off his shoulder for the try, 7-0. At 11 minutes UBC #13 Takoda McMullin slotted a penalty to make the score 7-3. 15 minutes into the match UBC took its first lead. The Lomas were attacking at the UBC 22 when the #10 tried a skip pass to the outside backs that was alertly picked off by his counterpart, James Biss, who legged it in from 80 metres out, 8-7 for UBC.

Our normal prediction article with rosters and predictions for the men’s Premier will come out tomorrow as usual but we thought we’d take a look at the playoff picture for the men’s Div 1 and women’s Premier today.
It’s good to see the Provincial and National bodies co-operating to ID talent for the national teams. It should be standard practice but as no surprise it’s part of the women’s national team pathway but not so much in the men’s pathway.
The BCRU announced the 2022 Inductees for the BC Rugby Hall of Fame, Ed Fairhurst, Bruce Kuklinski and Julia Sugawara. The BCRU are planning the event for June 2023, no specific date has been announced yet. They’ll be joined by the 2023 Inductees, that nomination process has been extended to March 31, 2023.
The BCRU seem to have their act together this year with a top notch slate of coaches. Leading the senior men’s team is Curry Hitchborn. It’s a no-brainer to have him in charge of the Provincial men’s team as he leads the most successful university program in the country and his UBC team are perennial contenders for the BC Premier title. Phil Mack and Jake Ilnicki are assistant coaches.
