A good result for BC as they maintain their strong winning record at the U19 level. At least six of the BC players will continue on next weekend for Canada U20 as they host Zimbabwe, Chile and Uruguay.

BC Rugby is pleased to announce the BC Bears U23 Womens travelling roster that will face the Alberta Wolfpack in an exciting double-header at the upcoming 2022 Western Canada Championships in Kelowna.
The BCRU refers to the match as BC U19 vs Canada U19 Selects, others refer to it as BC U19 vs Canada U20. It’s likely a combination of U19/U20 players from the Canada U20 camp, which is taking place this week at Shawnigan, vs the BC U19 team. The match is taking place at 1pm today and will be streamed on the BCRU YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/bcrugbyunion
The appointment was announced earlier this month but according to that announcement from BCRU, Newson starts the job this week.
Robin MacDowell has been an extraordinary servant of the game in Canada, both as a player and coach. He’s represented Canada on the World Series, at the Commonwealth Games, he played professionally in Italy and then played at the highest level domestically on a Rugby Canada Super League national championship team and on a NA4 championship team. As a coach he’s been in charge of the Canada U18 7s team, the USPORT 7s team, he’s been key in identifying high performance athletes for the Canada Women’s 7s program, like recent sensation Krissy Scurfield. He was in demand outside of Canada as the head coach of the Mexican women’s 7s team and the Trinidad & Tobago high performance program. He’s coached professionally with the Premier Sevens and Rugby Tens competitions. He also has the MacDowell Rugby Academy which operates in Saskatchewan and BC. He knows the world of high performance 7s and he knows the talent that’s out there. The program is in good hands.
The BCRU announced some significant changes to the Rules of Competition for next season. One of the major changes to impact the Premier league is the dropping of the “Import” rule that limited the number of players who are not “a citizen or permanent resident”. That’s a major change in policy direction that will no doubt spark some discussion. On the positive side it will raise the level of play in the Premier league and help cement its reputation as the top amateur league in North America. On the negative side it will create a gap between the have and have-not clubs, clubs that can afford to bring in high quality imports will raise their level faster than those clubs who cannot afford it. It may result in some blowouts in the first season before some clubs decide to drop to Division One in the following season, creating a more elite, reduced Premier league in the long run.

from Capilano Rugby
Caps welcome Nanaimo RFC
Caps always enjoy playing Nanaimo Hornets. The Snowcaps likewise enjoy playing the Yous to Bees over 40s. The two clubs have much in common and several ex Capilano players have played for the Hornets. Someone said to me yesterday it looks like an inter squad game. Both teams wear similar colours and the rivalry is strong but respectful! Capilanos are sad to see Nanaimo out of the Premier Division and hope to see them back in soon. The last time I remember them visiting they played a great game at the Premier level and the game was won by Caps at the final whistle by a Jeremy Simon drop kick. That was a classic game and todays first division match was a cracker also! I will defer to my colleague Steve Feenstra to report on that game. Also it is great to have Jayne Isherwood cover the Womens action as well. It is too big a job for one person and we are far better covered now.
