Howlers Win Final Match of Tour – Get Write Up on ESPN

The Howlers wrapped up their tour this weekend, 1 win and 2 losses, but the scope is much larger than the results on the field. The benefits to the young players and in a year or so, to the Canada U20 program, will be significant. Also the rugby contacts made with Argentine and Buenos Aires rugby administrators and players will pay dividends down the road. Kudos to the Howlers, Karl Fix, the supporters and most importantly the players for taking on this gruelling tour to one of the bastions of amateur rugby. Also a shout out to the man in Argentina who helped put this together, Les Cusworth.

BC Rugby 2026-27 Season

BCRU Announces Club Schedule Key Dates for 2026-27 Season

The BCRU haven’t posted the full 2026-27 schedule yet as they adapt to the new PlayHQ system which drives their website and schedule system. If you look at their website, at the time of writing, it looks to be in transition. They have announced the key dates, the season starts September 12th. It looks to be a 21 game week schedule, 11 game weeks in the fall, and then 10 game weeks in the spring, plus playoffs in April/May. The winter break goes from December 12th to January 16th. There’s no rep rugby, aka McKechnie Cup, in the schedule for the men but the women will have a 5 game rep season, Blue v Gold, or Island v Mainland. That’s in cooperation with the national women’s program and head coach Kevin Rouet.

Canada U20 Updates – August 226

43 Players Named to Canada U20 Challenger Preparation Camp

Rugby Canada announced the attendees at the rugby camp at Shawnigan Lake that has been running since August 8th. There are 43 players attending and 30 will be selected for the trip to Chile in October. There’s no mention yet of a squad match at the end of the camp.

Youth Olympics 2026

Canada U18 Men Entered in Youth Olympics in Senegal in November: Pools Announced

The Youth Olympics first started in 2010, it’s focused on U18 athletes. Rugby 7s was introduced in 2014 in China and continued on in Argentina in 2018. The 2022 Youth Olympics were scrubbed due to COVID disruptions and now Senegal are hosting in 2026. Canada have won medals in 2014 and 2018, both by the women’s U18 team, Silver in China and Bronze in Argentina. This is the first time the Canadian U18 men have been entered in the Youth Olympics Rugby 7s. The Canadian women are not entered, the USA women are the only entry from the Americas region.

Saratoga Cup 2026

Terrace Northmen Win Saratoga Cup; Rocky Mountain Rogues Win Women’s 7s Tournament

The Terrace Northmen defeated Elk Valley 14-5 in the Saratoga Cup final to win the 2026 title.  In the women’s 7s tournament there was an upset as the undefeated Yeti Rugby Club fell to Rocky Mountain Rogues, 15-12, a team they had defeated 31-5 on Day 1. The Day 2 video is linked below.

Ultimate 7s Kicks Off in September in Europe: Features Seven Canadian Players

What is Ultimate 7s? I only noticed recently since a number of Canadian women showed up on the rosters. It’s a series of 7s tournaments taking place in September in Europe. There are six teams and four tournaments in Madrid, Cardiff, Biarritz and London. There are seven Canadian women distributed over five of the teams, Krissy Scurfield, Carmen Izyk, Savannah Bauder, Charity Williams, Eden Kilgour, Breanne Nicholas and Larah Wright. I set Bob my Ai assistant loose on this and it compiled an overview and extracted the team rosters from the social media posts. That’s all listed below along with the main sources used.

Canadian Howlers U18 in Argentina; Rugby Canada Announces U18 Camp Attendees

There are a couple of U18 events overlapping in August. The Canadian Howlers, formerly the Dog River Howlers, are taking an elite team of Canadian U18 players to Argentina for three matches. In Memory Of… August 2026

Former Rugby Canada Media Manager Peter McMullan Passes at Age 90

There are probably not many in the rugby community who would remember Peter, but a reader noticed and sent his obituary in. Peter was the Rugby Canada media manager for 10 years, from 1986 to 1996, before Ian Kennedy took over. He was unique in that after working for Rugby Canada in that capacity he went on to work for World Rugby, at that time called the International Rugby Board, iRB. He worked out of Dublin for four years as the iRB Media Manager before returning to Vancouver Island and enjoying his retirement. He was into fishing in a big way and wrote several books on the subject and wrote articles for fishing magazines. I started with Rugby Canada around 1998 as their website manager so I didn’t overlap with him but he followed BCRN and he would frequently communicate his thoughts on rugby, we met up in Nanaimo for a rugby chat and beverage. It’s news that saddens me but he led a full life, if there is a place in the after life for rugby media folk, he’s there enjoying rugby and fishing.

Which High Schools Produce the Most Canadian Internationals?

I was browsing through Linkedin and came across this interesting post by Bob Skinstad on South African high school rugby. It was a map of which high schools produce the most Springboks. It had me thinking about Canadian high school rugby factories, which high schools produce the most Canadian internationals (XVs)? That picture changes over time but I thought I’d at least broach the subject as I don’t think Rugby Canada or the provincial unions track that information. I’ve started a basic list for BC and hopefully readers will help add to the list, I’ll also reach out to some school administrators to see if they maintain comprehensive lists from their school.

Players in the News – August 2026

Nic Benn Gets 1st Cap in NZ NPC with Hawke’s Bay

Nic Benn came on at the 66′ mark in Round 1 of the NPC for the Hawke’s Bay Magpies to gain his 1st NPC cap. He’s only 1 of 14 Canadian internationals who have played in the NPC. He has 13 caps for Canada but was unavailable for Canada’s 2026 summer internationals. Playing at NPC level puts him top of the selection list for outside backs for Canada. The NZ NPC competition is higher than MLR and is more on par with France Pro D2 or the UK Championship.
