There are a variety of rugby topics coming across the Editor’s desk in the last couple of days. We’ll start with something local.

MacDowell Rugby Academy operating out of Cowichan High School won the Boys U18 Elite competition over the weekend, defeating a team from Okotoks Alberta. In the Girls U18 Elite it was Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers who took top honours defeating Abbotsford. The Vancouver Wave won the BC U20 regional title with a 29-19 win over the Vancouver Island Tide. Vancouver were up 17-7 at the half, the Tide closed the gap to 17-12 early in the second half. Vancouver added to their tally to go up 24-12 with still 30 minutes left in the match. The team exchanged tries to push the score to 29-19 with 10 minutes left. Vancouver ran into card troubles and were down to 12 men by the time the final whistle blew, they played tenacious defence to keep the Tide off the score board for the final 10 minutes and hoisted the cup.

September 26th – On This Day in BC Sport History: 1908
Vancouver hosts the first visit to BC of an international rugby side as the Anglo-Welsh Fifteen (later known as the British Lions) defeat the BC Reps 61-5 at Stanley Park’s Brockton Oval before 2500 spectators who were enthralled by what the newspapers described as the best display of rugby ever seen in BC. BC scored its only try right off the opening kickoff when the large number of Welsh immigrants in the crowd began singing the Welsh hymn ‘Land of my Fathers.’ As the Welsh players stood distracted by the emotion of the moment, the local side went down the field and scored a converted try for five points. The Anglo-Welsh responded by scoring 61 unanswered points.

Coastal Cup
Pacific Pride v University Of Victoria @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Al Humphries AR2: Jamie Roszel
Venue: MacDonald Park
Week 4 of the Coastal Cup kicks off this weekend but with UBC in France, there’s only the one match, Pride v UVic. The Pride look well ahead in the standings with 3 bonus point wins, a win this weekend would all but seal the deal for the Pride as returning champions. Speaking of UBC it looks like they lost both of their matches on Day 1 in Bordeaux, first against Bordeaux (8-16) and then Cape Town (7-24). On Saturday they’ll play the US team, Atlantic All Stars and then the Australian side from Sydney.
The BCRU bill it as the largest 7s tournament in Western Canada, we count 93 teams entered in 8 divisions. There’s U14 boys/girls, U16 boys/girls, U18 Open boys/girls and U18 Elite (boys/girls). It’s interesting, from a growth demographic perspective, that the largest division is the U16 girls with 20 teams entered. Most teams are from BC but there are a number of Alberta teams entered as well, we count 23 Alberta teams, with a few teams such as SheDevils, Lucky Ladies and 1697 where we’re unsure of their home base.
