European Champions and Challenge Cup Updates

Updates on the European Champions and Challenge Cup with One Pool Round Remaining

There’s one more pool round in the European Champions and Challenge Cup before the Round of 16 starts in April. We’ll be especially watching Castres (Tyler Ardron) and Montpellier (Tyler Duguid). Castres are in the Champions Cup but sit at the bottom of their pool, they’ll need a win in Munster next weekend to have a chance of a top 4 finish and advancement to the Round of 16. If they finish 5th they drop to the Challenge Cup and if 6th, they’re out. Montpellier are in the Challenge Cup and top their pool, they play tomorrow (Sunday) and have a good chance of remaining #1 seed in their pool.

Jamie Cudmore Announced as a Forwards Coach at Nissa Rugby in Nice, France – Completes DESJEPS Postgraduate Coaching Diploma; Josh Thiel Signs with Monaco Rugby

Congratulations to Jamie Cudmore and Josh Thiel on new appointments in French rugby. Jamie has been announced as a Forwards Coach at Nissa Rugby, formerly called Stade Niçois Rugby. They were relegated last season from Pro D2, and will be playing in Nationale for 2025/26. They’ll no doubt be looking for promotion back to Pro D2 next season. Josh Thiel picked up a contract in French rugby playing for AS Monaco, they play in Fédérale 2 and just missed out on promotion to Fédérale 1, no doubt a goal for the upcoming season.

The Crusaders v Blues match was cancelled due to COVID and each team were awarded 2 points. With the Hurricanes loss to the Highlanders it didn’t effect the standings with the Blues finishing second and the Hurricanes third.

The Crusaders and Blues both claimed bonus point wins but with only two weeks left, the Blues are running out of time for a late run at the title. The Crusaders just have to win at home next week against the Highlanders to wrap it up, if they lose then it comes down to the final Blues v Crusaders match.

Super Rugby Week Seven Results and Video Highlights

The Crusaders were hit with their first loss this weekend but are still in the driver’s seat. Blues in second have 17 points with only two games left, Hurricanes in third have 16 points with 2 games left. The Crusaders at 19 points have three games left so their magic number is 28 points to win the competition, that’s 9 points from 3 games. They’re still clear favourites.

The Crusaders, even though they had a bye, took a step closer to clinching the title as the Blues, their closest competitor, faltered on the weekend. Now the Crusaders are 5 points clear with a game in hand. The remaining teams have 3 games left so Crusaders only need 11 points from their 4 remaining games to clinch the title.
