Olympic 7s Updates – June 2021
Pools Announced for Olympic 7s: Men: Canada, Fiji, GB, Japan; Women: Canada, France, Fiji, Brazil
The pools were announced for the Olympic 7s, July 26-31 2021.
As expected it’s going to be a tougher journey for the men to make the QF than for the women. There are 12 teams in each competition, 8 make the quarter-finals. The top two finishers in each of the 3 pools plus the 2 best 3rd place finishers will go through.

It was touch and go whether the Six Nations would launch amid COVID but apparently a last minute decision by the French Sport Minister to relax the quarantine restrictions for the tournament allowed it to proceed.

Ollie Nott packing down in the 5 man scrum wearing #8 helped the California based Rhinos to a perfect 5-0 record over the two days. They defeated the favoured London Royals in their final match, coming back at the whistle to score the winning try and add a two point conversion. One of the variations in the tournament is allowing conversion options varying from 1 to 5 points depending on the angle and distance.

The Blues and Crusaders continue on as favourites after Week 2. The Chiefs again had a man advantage situation and were unable to fully capitalize. The Blues were able to score one first half try through pick and go from the forwards and added a penalty, The Chiefs kicked three penalties, for a 10-9 HT score.

Our “experts” all got this one wrong although both Clay and AaronT were minutes away from claiming 2 points for the winning team plus correct differential as they had both called Chiefs +2. It was Chiefs +2, 27-25, when Bryn Gatland dropped a goal with just over a minute and half remaining. The fact that Bryn is the son of the opposing coach, Warren Gatland of the Chiefs, makes it even more amazing. He wasn’t even listed to play in the match until the starting #10 Josh Ioane was pulled with a late injury. Mitch Hunt was moved from fullback to #10 and Bryn Gatland was brought onto the bench. As AaronF remarked, “Gatlands son wasn’t in the lineup when I made the pick, re draw!”
