France and Japan have dropped out of the Vancouver 7s and presumably out of the Edmonton 7s. New teams Mexico, Jamaica and Hong Kong have been added.

Olympic 7s Updates – June 2021

Pools Announced for Olympic 7s: Men: Canada, Fiji, GB, Japan; Women: Canada, France, Fiji, Brazil

The pools were announced for the Olympic 7s, July 26-31 2021.

As expected it’s going to be a tougher journey for the men to make the QF than for the women. There are 12 teams in each competition, 8 make the quarter-finals. The top two finishers in each of the 3 pools plus the 2 best 3rd place finishers will go through.

Canada at the 2021 Olympics

Canada Announce Men’s and Women’s 7s Teams for Olympics

Canada announced their men’s and women’s teams for the Olympics in July. Thirteen players are listed per team, with 12 selected for match day and 1 alternate. There’s no mention of who the non-playing alternate is on each squad. The USA women announced their roster earlier this month and identified an alternate plus two travelling reserves for a 15 player squad. The USA men haven’t announced their squad yet.

What’s the Latest on the John Tait Situation with Rugby Canada and the Women’s 7s Team

Back on February 5th Rugby Canada dropped a bombshell on the rugby community with the announcement that they were putting in a “temporary” coaching team for the women’s 7s program pending an investigation. The temporary coach would be Sandro Fiorino, the women’s XVs coach, and the Olympic coach would be Australian Mick Byrne. The press release was vague and left current coach, John Tait, twisting in the wind. Although the press release didn’t mention him by name, the question in everyone’s mind was why was John Tait being relieved of the coaching position. Emirates Invitational 7s 2021 – Tournament #2

Canada Men and Women Make Finals of Emirates Invitational 7s Week 2: Women Lose to France; Men Lose to Argentina

A better result for the men in the 2nd tournament. Canada beat France 29-10 on Day 2 to make the final. They lost to Argentina 26-19 in the final. Argentina won both men’s tournaments in Dubai.

Canada Women Win Gold with Victory Over USA: Men Win Plate Final Over Chile

After watching the first matches on Day 2 where Canada’s women lost to France and the men to Kenya, there was a little bit of trepidation about the programs progress over the break. However by the end of the day with the women winning Gold and the men winning the Plate, it looked as if things were on course and as they were before COVID hit.
