In Under 21 action, the only game to be played this year resulted in a 20 to 20 draw between the VRU and FVRU teams. This results in both teams co-sharing the Dunbar Cup for 2004.

The U-20 Rising Tide rugby team plays their first game of the season at 11:30 on May 23 at Wolfson Fields at UBC Against the Vancouver Wave U-20 Team.
This is a scheduled game for the Dunbar Cup (Under 20 BC championship) and a part of the National Junior Championship the first step in the Rugby Canada HP Program.
This should be an exciting young team with Players like Mack Poole at U Vic, Dylan Jones at Castaways, Bruce Watson at Velox having played significant time in the CDI Premiership already along with players like Pieter van der Mere , Andrew de Goede, Nat Waldman being key contributors to the JBAA 1sts Provincial Championship team.

After an undefeated Dunbar Cup season and a convincing win over Calgary in the Western Final, the Vancouver Wave will host the Toronto Rebellion in the Under 20 Men’s National Final, this Saturday, August 1st at Klahanie Park. Kick-off is set for 3:00 PM and general admission is $10.00 (free for youth with student ID).
Prior to the National Final, it will be BC Blue vs BC Gold in a trial match as Coach Mike James and his management team look to determine who will be on the BC Senior Men’s protected list. The match will kick-off at 1:00 PM at Klahanie Park.
A protected list of 30 senior men and 12 development players (Under 20) must be submitted by the four Canadian franchises no later than August 1 at midnight. The trial match will provide the athletes with a final opportunity to make their case for inclusion to the British Columbia Men’s Provincial team who will compete in the 2009 Americas Rugby Championship.

The national U20 championship was working well, from BC’s perspective it was a natural continuation of the Dunbar Keg, the regional U20 competition between FVRU, VIRU and VRU. Apparently Rugby Canada unilaterally decided to change it to a U19 competition and some provinces basically said no, there’s not enough time to make the changes since we have U18 programs to support. So maybe next year there will be a U19 national championship, who knows. There seems to be a noticeable communication gap between the national body, Rugby Canada, and the rest of the Canadian rugby community. They might as well make the CRC a U20 championship this year.

We need a league that transitions players from high school to senior club, where they play against athletes in their own age bracket. The BC U20 league is an attempt to create that environment. There is a BC U20 regional championship already, the Dunbar Keg is the annual three game series between Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Fraser Valley. It used to be in the summer, now it’s slotted in January/February. It’s good but not enough, the U20 league is the missing piece but its creation is not without its challenges.

The only unknown going into the final day of action was how the U20 sides would match up, in the end it was the Valley with a comfortable 28-12 win. The Valley were ahead 28-0 at the half and the Tide came back to make the game a little closer by the end. The Valley claim the Dunbar Keg.
