Editorial: Rugby Canada Damage Control, Out of Control

Rugby Canada and RugbyPass (Owned by World Rugby) Do Damage Control on Steve Meehan Hiring

The Steve Meehan hiring is basically old news, most Canadian rugby fans aren’t happy but they’ve moved on. Which is why it’s difficult to understand why RugbyPass posted a Rugby Canada explanation today (January 21st) that was extremely poorly presented and not very credible. It’s an Ai (artificial intelligence) voice reading a script to slides, it’s not very convincing.

There’s even suspicion that the script is Ai generated, one slide quotes, “”the profile identified the need for a strong technical coach rather than a Director of Coaching Coordinator”, the term “Director of Coaching Coordinator” is a giveaway, there are positions called Director of Coaching and there’s Coaching Coordinator but only Ai (or an intern) would come up with a “Director of Coaching Coordinator”.

Perhaps the most embarrassing part of the slide show is the slide that shows “Canadian Culture” under the Leadership criteria in the selection categories. Steve Meehan may be an OK bloke but he’s not ticking the Leadership boxes under Canadian Culture. It makes one wonder how many human eyes actually read through the slide show.

RugbyPass has been RugbyFumble lately when they ran a story on Jamie Cudmore wanting to help restore Canadian men’s rugby and then subsequently deleted the article the next day when they found out Rugby Canada had already selected Australian Steve Meehan. Now they sink deeper with an article that transcribes an Ai assisted slide show that has little credibility.

We did find out some interesting things in the slide show, World Rugby had a representative in the coach selection, as we suspected when you put in almost $4 million to Rugby Canada coffers, you get to call the shots. The string of out of country coaches the men’s program have hired are a testament to World Rugby largess and the connections you make in Tier One rugby nations.

The RugbyPass article is here (unless it’s been deleted) and includes the Rugby Canada video.
