President’s Message

JBAA Players, Parents and Supporters, welcome to the 2022/23 season. Pretty soon we will be at the Mac and, beyond playing sport, creating friendships and memories. I want to share some information about the upcoming season.

First of all, coaches are in place for all junior teams. We will introduce them to you in the coming days and weeks on our blog and through social media. Minis will see many of last year’s coaches return and we’ll introduce some new faces.

At the adult level, JBAA is very happy to announce the return of Jen Ross as Women’s head coach. Leading the Men this year is former assistant and now Head Coach, Tony Healy. Both have Rugby Canada experience, are Level 3 certified and share a philosophy that sport should provide an opportunity to compete, a chance to build fitness, and to develop character. They believe TEAMS ARE FAMILIES AND THAT WE WORK AND GROW TOGETHER!

First day out for the Mighty Minis (U7-U12) will be Sunday, September 11th at 10:00 a.m. Registration t-shirts will be handed out. It will also be a treat day!

First practises for junior teams (U14-U19) will be announced very soon as we finalize field allocations. Keep an eye on your email and our website.

Senior Men and Senior Women are already active. Please contact senior-mens@jbaa.ca or senior-womens@jbaa.ca to find out when the next practise will be.

Registration is open. At JBAA everybody plays. If you need assistance with covering the cost to play, please contact me at president@jbaa.ca.

It’s going to be another fun year on the Mac. So let’s get playing. Remember: you can’t stop it, YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAR!

Registration from toddler to adult

Our registration packages cover players from toddler ages to adults – we will have teams for all age grades!

This year the mini’s will register by age group and Mini’s players are registered as mixed gender (though we plan on splitting the U12 group into boys and girls when they get on the field). BC Rugby has changed the age grades for boys to align with the girls (U14, U16, and U19) and junior rugby is split by gender. If you aren’t sure which age grade your child falls into, take a look at the package description displayed in Sportlomo which will indicate the applicable birth year(s).

Our registration page explains the different price brackets for registration and what is included in each. We have raised our rates this year by $25 across all age groups. This extra amount will be set aside and used to secure long term access to reliable, usable fields for the wet, dark winter nights we encounter during parts of our season.

We hired a Youth Coordinator!

Greetings JBAA family and new members!

My name is Rob and I’m excited to be the new Youth Coordinator for the James Bay Athletic Association. I have more than 20 years experience coaching everyone from youth to Premiership and in four different countries. I intend to build upon the great work that’s already been done and aid our coaches in providing your children with the best possible sporting experience!

We have committed to running a team at every age group this season, each with a handful of leaders. If you think you might like to pitch in as a co-coach or manager, let me know. I am nearly finished a comprehensive resource to support our coaches with modern instructional strategies and fun activities.

I look forward to seeing you again or meeting you for the first time!

Hosting out of town players

We believe wholeheartedly that the club’s success is expressed through the growth and development of our athletes regardless of their regional or national origins.

To enable this to happen, we need your help.

As you all know, real estate and rooming in Victoria can be prohibitively expensive. The Senior Mens team is asking for help in finding accommodation; whether it be as a billet volunteer or connecting us to someone with suitable and affordable suites or rooms for rent.

Thanks in advance for helping our out of town players!
