Eleven Canadian Teams Undefeated on Day 1 of the Tropical 7s

There are several Canadian teams that are undefeated after Day 1 action. The MacDowell Rugby women’s team who are defending champions went 3-0 on Day 1. The team features players like former Canada 7s player Kayla Moleschi, and Westshore’s Renee Gonzalez. I recognize three players from the Howler’s tour to Guatemala as well, Gracie Anderson, Brogan Mior and Trinity Todd, also Thunder Indigenous Rugby Phil Mack award recipient, Bella Anderton-Teasdale.

The Vikings U23 women, we think from the Oshawa Vikings, are 3-0 in the U23 division.

The Vancouver Island Crimson Tide U16 girls are rocking it with a 4-0 record and a 166-0 points differential in the Open division. The MacDowell Rugby U16 girls are also 4-0 and a Canadian team looks well placed to win this division.

In the U16 Open Boys the Toronto Reds and Eastern Ontario (EORU) are both 3-0 on Day 1.

In the U16 Girls Elite division the Niagara (NRU) are the only undefeated team at 3-0.

At the U18 Girls Open division, several Canadian teams are undefeated on Day 1, Niagara (NRU), New Brunswick (Spruce), Newfoundland (Rock).

In the U18 Boys Open division, MacDowell Rugby are 3-0 and undefeated on Day 1.

Tropical 7s in Florida Kicks Off on Friday: 72 of the 200+ Teams are from Canada

The Tropical 7s tournament in Florida has some additional interest this year as tensions between Canada and USA on the economic front are ramped up with the Trump tariff policy. Many news reports indicate Canadian travel to the USA has dropped in numbers, yet here we are 200+ teams at the Florida tournament and 72 of the teams are from Canada. It’s a story within a story that we’ll follow up on post-tournament.

The tournament kicks off tomorrow, there’s strong Canadian representation across the board but especially in the youth divisions. The Girls U16 Open division has 13 Canadian teams and 2 USA teams. Several of the Canadian rugby academies have multiple teams, MacDowell Rugby has 8 teams and Upright Rugby has 8 teams. Canadian clubs have a strong presence, Oakville Crusaders have 5 teams and Oshawa Vikings have 4 teams. Regions like Eastern Ontario Rugby Union (EORU) have 7 teams entered.

Three Canadian teams claimed titles at the Tropical 7s in 2024. MacDowell Rugby won the senior women’s title, the Oakville Crusaders won the Boys U18 Elite title and Rugby Quebec won the U16 Girls Open title.

You can follow the tournament on some of their social platforms, Tropical 7s FB page, Tropical 7s Insta page, Tropical 7s X page, Tropical 7s YouTube page.

This is a list of teams we got from the Goff Report, we marked the Canadian teams in red. If you have a story from a Canadian perspective on your experience at the tournament as a parent, player, coach, admin, drop us a line, we’d love to hear it, editor@bcrugbynews.com
