from Rugby Canada

Kevin Rouet, Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team, has selected the 30 player squad to represent Canada on home soil for WXV 1 this September and October in Vancouver. Tickets can be purchased HERE.

Canada is competing in the top tier of WXV (WXV1), which includes the top three teams from the Women’s Six Nations (England, France, Ireland) and the top three teams from the Pacific Four Series (Canada, New Zealand, USA).

“Our preparation time was short but efficient. This will be a strong team,” said Rouet. “All the players have worked very hard for the last couple of weeks to prepare for WXV and we are excited for these next three matches and for the chance to play on home soil here in Vancouver against the best rugby teams in the world. France, Ireland and England will each challenge us in different ways but it’s another opportunity to test ourselves and another step in our journey to the Rugby World Cup next year.”

The team will be captained by Canada’s all-time women’s cap leader, Tyson Beukeboom, who earned her record-breaking 68th international cap in Canada’s history-making win against New Zealand in May. 23 players selected for WXV 1 were part of the team that won the 2024 Pacific Four Series earlier this year.

Rori Wood, Caroline Crossley and Asia Hogan-Rochester will each look to earn their first cap for Canada. Wood recently spent five seasons with the University of British Columbia while Hogan-Rochester and Crossley won an Olympic silver medal at Paris 2024 alongside fellow WXV teammates Fancy Bermudez, Olivia Apps, Alysha Corrigan and Taylor Perry.

Karen Paquin, who has 38 caps for Canada and silver medal from the 2014 Rugby World Cup, returns to the team for the first time since the 2021 Rugby World Cup, while Sara Kaljuvee looks to make her first appearance since Canada’s 2023 Pacific Four Series match against Australia.

Canada will open the tournament versus France at BC Place in Vancouver, with kick-off scheduled for 3:45pm PT / 6:45pm ET on Sunday September 29. Canada has won two of their last three matches against the French including at the inaugural WXV 1 tournament hosted in New Zealand last year when a 66th-minute try from Fancy Bermudez clinched a 29-20 win in the last round of WXV 1 to leapfrog Australia into second place of the final standings.

Canada Announce 35 Player Long List for WXV 1 Training Camp

Coach Kevin Rouet has announced a training camp of 35 players for the WXV 1 which starts September 29th with Canada taking on France at BC Place.

A couple of questions that immediately come to mind, how will the Canada team perform without Sophie de Goede, their star captain, who is out injured. The second question, what will the attendance at BC Place be compared to the men’s game against Japan where the crowd looked sparse. The crowd was estimated between 5k to 6k although Rugby Canada never announced attendance.

There are more 7s cross over players than ever before with at least 9 players who have suited up for the national 7s program, current and past. The return of Karen Paquin at 37 years of age might be a sign they’re looking to fill the leadership gap left by Sophie de Goede’s temporary absence.

from Rugby Canada

Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team, Kevin Rouet, has selected 35 players to attend training camp as Canada prepares to host the second edition of WXV 1, a global women’s rugby competition, this September and October in Vancouver.

Players will assemble for camp beginning on Saturday September 7 in Langford. The team will train for two weeks at the Al Charron National Training Centre before heading over to Vancouver on September 21. Canada’s official WXV squad will be announced later in September.

“The players and staff are all excited to be back together again after a very exciting spring and summer for women’s rugby in Canada,” said Rouet. “We have a strong group of players coming into camp to prepare for WXV 1. We have seen significant growth and development in the squad through our recent success at the Pacific Four Series and the Olympics in Paris with many of the players also continuing to play at a high level both internationally and in Canada. WXV 1 represents the next step in our journey as we look forward to the 2025 Rugby World Cup.”

WXV 1 will mark the return of the team for the first time since their historic win over New Zealand to win the 2024 Pacific Four Series title. 25 players invited to camp represented Canada at the Pacific Four Series earlier this year where the team also had strong victories over the USA and Australia.

Having had experience with Canada’s 7s and 15s squads since the 2021 Rugby World Cup, camp invitations were also extended to Olivia Apps, Caroline Crossley, Alysha Corrigan, Chloe Daniels, Fancy Bermudez, Florence Symonds and Taylor Perry who claimed silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team.

Gabrielle Senft, Fabiola Forteza and Justine Pelletier have been named to the camp squad after claiming the championship of the top national league for women’s rugby in France with Stade Bordelais in June.

Returning to the training environment for the first time since Rugby World Cup 2021 are veterans Karen Paquin and Brianna Miller. Both spent the summer playing in the Quebec Ontario Rugby Championship, a new inter-provincial competition between the two provinces.
