The Laval Rouge et Or successfully defended their Canadian title, Sunday afternoon, by defeating the Victoria Vikes 32-13 in the championship game of the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship, held in Quebec City.
UBC won their 4th consecutive CanWest title with the UVic Vikes finishing 2nd. Both teams will advance to the national finals in Quebec City from November 1st to 5th.

Coming off a third-straight conference championship, it’s no surprise the UBC Thunderbirds have once again been named favourites this season.
An unexpected announcement from UBC (posted below) indicates that Curry Hitchborn has stepped down from the head coach position at UBC. Several readers have been asking for more details but we don’t have any at this time.

The UBC Thunderbirds won their first ever Women’s Rugby 7s Canada West banner, going a perfect 15-0 on the season and breaking the four-year dominance of Victoria Vikes after the three-stop series wrapped up at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon.

VICTORIA A game-winning try in the final match of the day by the UBC Thunderbirds Soshanah Seumanutafa as time expired gave UBC its second-straight tournament win, Feb. 12 at Wallace Field.
The first round of the women’s CanWest series is on this weekend in Edmonton. The series includes UVic, UBC, TWU, Alberta, Brandon, Lethbridge, Calgary, Regina. The schedule/results and link to CanWest TV is here.
It was a close match in muddy conditions as the T-Birds went into the half down 21-19 but scored twice early in the second half and then conceded a late try to claim the win.

MORAGA, Calif. Playing the No. 3-ranked Saint Mary’s Gaels, Trinity Western lost 45-10 Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
One point to come out of the Men’s University Championships is that UBC are in a class of their own in Canadian University Rugby. They amassed a +116 point differential over the three rounds to win the title for the 4th time in 5 years. They defeated McGill 48-5 in the 60 minute match and took their foot off the gas for the last 20 when they were ahead 41-0.
