2024 Recap – January

A Look at the 2024 Stories in January 2024: Vancouver Highlanders Player Announcements; Adam Roberts Resigns U20 Coach; Phil Mack Appointed Men’s XVs Attack Coach; World Rugby Invests in MLR Charlotte; BC Rugby Season Restarts; Perth 7s; Pacific Four Series Announced… and More

There were a lot of key rugby events and announcements in January 2024. The Vancouver Highlanders came on the scene and announced they would name their 25 player roster over the following 12 weeks. We’ll see next week  whether there’s some Highlanders activity to kick of the new year.

Adam Roberts resigned as men’s U20 coach and Phil Mack was appointed as men’s XVs attack coach. The U20 program didn’t fare any better under a full time coach in 2024, and Phil had limited impact under Kingsley Jones. We’ll see how 2025 under a new head coach will impact both the men’s U20 and senior programs.

Rugby Canada announced its plans for National Training Centres and even posted a position for Program Director – National Training Centers at 100k a year. We haven’t heard anything about these National Training Centres or even if Rugby Canada filled the position, and neither does Google know, as there are search matches in January and then nothing.

World Rugby announced its investment in the Charlotte based development team to be entered in the MLR for 2024, Anthem. The women’s CanWest 7s tournament kicked off in January with UVic winning the first tournament. The BC Leagues kicked off the second half of their season with the Premier set to start the first week of February.

The women’s Pacific Four Series schedule was announced, Canada would go on to win that tournament in May by defeating NZ.
