BC Rugby is seeking multiple Age-Grade Coaches to work collaboratively and provide performance programs for male and female BC Bears teams for the 2024 season.
There are a variety of rugby topics coming across the Editor’s desk in the last couple of days. We’ll start with something local.
Collegiate Webinar
Adam Roberts runs an annual Collegiate Rugby Webinar where he puts together rugby athletes in the grade 10 to 12 age group (and their families) with university rugby programs. He also brings in a College Rugby Advisory consultant to explain the landscape. The poster below has the details, he’s adding more university programs but currently UBC, UVic, TWU, UBCO, Western Washington, Central Washington, Guelph, UPEI are signed up.
MacDowell Rugby Academy operating out of Cowichan High School won the Boys U18 Elite competition over the weekend, defeating a team from Okotoks Alberta. In the Girls U18 Elite it was Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers who took top honours defeating Abbotsford. The Vancouver Wave won the BC U20 regional title with a 29-19 win over the Vancouver Island Tide. Vancouver were up 17-7 at the half, the Tide closed the gap to 17-12 early in the second half. Vancouver added to their tally to go up 24-12 with still 30 minutes left in the match. The team exchanged tries to push the score to 29-19 with 10 minutes left. Vancouver ran into card troubles and were down to 12 men by the time the final whistle blew, they played tenacious defence to keep the Tide off the score board for the final 10 minutes and hoisted the cup.
The roster for Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team’s rematch with England on September 30 has been named by Head Coach Kevin Rouet.
Following a 50-24 loss to England on September 23 in Exeter, Canada will kick off against the Red Roses once more on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. PT / 10:00 a.m. ET (3:00 p.m. local time). StoneX Stadium in London, the Premier 15s home of the Saracens and Sophie de Goede, McKinley Hunt and Alexandria Ellis, will play host.

September 26th – On This Day in BC Sport History: 1908
Vancouver hosts the first visit to BC of an international rugby side as the Anglo-Welsh Fifteen (later known as the British Lions) defeat the BC Reps 61-5 at Stanley Park’s Brockton Oval before 2500 spectators who were enthralled by what the newspapers described as the best display of rugby ever seen in BC. BC scored its only try right off the opening kickoff when the large number of Welsh immigrants in the crowd began singing the Welsh hymn ‘Land of my Fathers.’ As the Welsh players stood distracted by the emotion of the moment, the local side went down the field and scored a converted try for five points. The Anglo-Welsh responded by scoring 61 unanswered points.
