On a cool early November day at UBC, with both teams missing some key players, it was anybody’s guess which team would prevail on the day. Initially it appeared that the Ravens would be that team as they easily mauled in two tries by the 20 minute mark and had an advantage in the sets and at the contact point. But UBC’s energy and pace of play brought them back into the game gradually and they were only down 12-3 at the half having dodged a bullet in the late stages when a UBC defender played the ball just outside his own try line while off his feet denying a likely try. He was yellow carded but the Ravens’ attack from the 5 metre line was stymied when the ball carrier Shelton was seen to make a second movement while off his feet after the tackle.

Week 5 of the men’s Premier kicks off with some teams fielding a much changed roster with the men’s national XVs in Romania, the men’s national 7s preparing for the RAN 7s in Trinidad, the Canadian Classics in Bermuda and, yes, Touch Rugby Canada in Phoenix, all claiming players.

After a Thanksgiving break, an election and heavy seasonal rains, I mean an “atmospheric river”, interrupted league play it was the hardcore faithful who rolled up to take in the games at Burnaby Lake on Saturday. But the break in play did not detract from the Ravens’ form as the Rippers won 27-17 in Div 1 play and the premier team carried on with another solid performance.
It’s Week 4 of the BC Premier with some good matchups. The Vikes host TWU which is a Coastal Cup match but more importantly the qualifier for the University Championships with a BC #2 berth for the victor. In Women’s Premer it’s Seattle at Burnaby and CW hosting the Thunderbirds 2nd team.
A huge upset in the Coastal Cup with TWU upsetting the home team Vikes however the Vikes advance to the University Championships based on the points of the home and away games between the three university sides, a further explanation below.

The BC Premier enters Week 3 after the Thanksgiving break, I’m in Guatemala at the Gran Jaguar 7s tournament with the Howlers. A couple of BC Premier props are here as well playing for the Howlers, Denver Fatt and Simeon John. Late notice that the Caps v Ravens game was cancelled due to field closures, also we’ve been advised the Lomas v Burnaby match was cancelled/postponed for the same reason.
