Burnaby Split Matches with Bays: Win in Reserves; Loss in Premier: FULL MATCH VIDEOS

by Mike Devlin

BLRC Premier Reserve Men 45 – JBAA 19

The BLRC Premier Reserve Men are on a roll, going 5-0 in the Regional Pre-season tourney and 3-0 since the season began. The squad, led by Tom Menzies, has been undefeated and have shown the ability to put points on the board and play some stingy defence. They’ve had some lop-sided victories and had to “hold on” to close out tight games. On Saturday, the BLRC ran rough-shod over a young James Bay team. The BLRC were just too big and too fast for James Bay to stop. Nolan Shelley was 100% from the tee, making all 6 conversions and one penalty. The try’s were distributed evenly, 3 from the forwards and 3 from the backs.

On a windy day at MacDonald Park the Ravens prevailed in a close game between the two top teams from the mainland and Island pre-season competitions. The game hung in the balance till the last ten minutes and, but for a couple of early turnovers by the Bays, it could have been a different result.

Capilano’ First home stand of the regular 2022- 2023 Rugby season:

Caps hosted U-Vic, Rowing Club and Simon Fraser today and the First Division Women were away to Burnaby. The weather looked a bit scary but fortunately the rains held off for the entire event. Caps only managed one win today by the Premier Reserves but they were in the Premier match until the final whistle and it was exciting rugby. Thank you to Steve Feenstra and Heather Muir for writing the reports below.

Burnaby Lake Match Reports by Mike Devlin: Burnaby Lake vs Kats Div 2, Surrey Div 1, Capilano Women’s Premier and Pride Men’s Premier

BLRC 2nd Div Men 9 – Kats RFC 24

Saturday’s game was the 4th game out of 6 that the BLRC have played with uncontested scrums. During the entire 2021/22 season, the BLRC 3rd XV played one game with uncontested scrums. The rule changes brought in by the competition committee prior to the season has caused what was a minor problem to become a major one. Last season the BLRC were short on props. This was, as always, felt mostly in the 3rd Division. Rather than forfeit games, we taught 3 or 4 guys to prop and made the semi-finals with one of those new props playing significant minutes in our final game. I always assume that if the BLRC are dealing with a problem, then all other clubs are facing a similar problem. That means that we were not the only club, training our huskier back rowers and fatter hookers to play Loose Head, and virtually no games went uncontested. This year, no consequences and 67% of games aren’t real rugby.

Ravens Edge T-Birds 28-20 – Report by Peter MacDonald

Forty-nine years of rivalry between these two fraternal clubs resumed before a big crowd at Jericho for the start the BC Premier season. The game did not disappoint as the rain held off and the conditions allowed for open rugby, though the structure, ball retention and decision making on both sides may not have been at peak season form.
