It’s not quite the full lineup for the World Seven Series in this abbreviated COVID 2021 version. The two Canadian tournaments, Vancouver Sept 18-19 and Edmonton Sept 25-26, will be missing some of the top teams, there’s no Fiji, New Zealand, Australia or Argentina. So the only Olympic medalist attending is France on the women’s side. Another twist is that Great Britain will enter as a team, a first for the series.
MLR have released their all-star team and runners up. They released a 1st team, 2nd team and Honorable Mention. It’s interesting to note where the best players are from, here is a breakdown by country.

In a surprise move late last year, complaints of bullying and mistreatment were alleged against the National Senior Womens Rugby 7s (NSW7s) team head coach and high-performance director, John Tait. Following rugby sevens successful second appearance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2021 will return with a pair of mens Series events, combined with womens fast-four tournaments in Canada, with Vancouver on 18-19 September followed by Edmonton on 25-26 September
The MLR title match between LA and Atlanta had Canadian players on each team. On the Atlanta side were Matt Heaton, openside, and Conor Keys, second row. On the LA team were DTH on the wing and Corey Thomas at #8.

The 2020 (2021) Olympic Rugby 7s may be remembered for the emergence of two nations that raised their game, Fiji and China.
The list continues to grow. Damian McGrath dismissed because he supported the men’s 7s team strike. John Tait fired because he pushed the women’s 7 team too hard and was accused of bullying and abuse. Now Jamie Cudmore shot himself in the foot, with anger built up over the way his friend, John Tait, was treated by Rugby Canada and the women’s 7s team.
