Burnaby Lake 26 @ James Bay AA 21 – MacDonald Park

The legend of the downhill slope at MacDonald Park continues. The Bays were ahead 18-7 when they had the slope in the first half, Burnaby were 19-3 in the 2nd half with the slope. 37 points scored at one end, 10 at the other – it could just be coincidence – yeah right. It was a great game though, the type of game that should be played in a stadium enjoyed by a few thousand spectators, not by a few hundred at a city park. Rugby is a great spectator sport and clubs need to bring in more revenue, changes they are a comin’.

[ed. comments below. LATEST UPDATE UBC CONFIRM THEY ARE IN PLAYOFFS. A reporting error by the the BC Rugby Union, where they missed a number, changes the whole news. BCRU reported the score as UBC 7 – Kamloops 19, in actuality they missed a 2, it should have been UBC 72 – Kamloops 19. It sort of makes a difference. Apologies to the UBC Alumni who were getting heart palpitations and google mapping the nearest emergency room.]

Castaway Wanderers 8 @ Burnaby Lake 18 Burnaby Lake

A satisfying win no doubt for the Burnaby tight XV as they matched a tight five with 3 national team players on it. The centre pairing of Dolesau and Gotegote seemed to be the difference in the close match. CW will be disappointed not to come away with some points but due to UVic’s loss of points for the default, they only sit 1 point back of the final playoff spot. Burnaby continue to lead the standings with a comfortable 8 point buffer over 2nd place James Bay.

It Takes a Village…

This weekend we went more grassroots, we didn’t cover the BC Premier match but focused on Div 1, Women’s Rugby and U14. Thanks to Pro Fit Sports for the hoodies and Heritage House Trophies for the medals. Here are some of the pics from the weekend. It’s especially rewarding to work with youth rugby and a reminder where it all begins, it takes a community to raise a rugby player.

UVic Vikes 26 @ Burnaby Lake 27 – Burnaby Lake

A lot closer than I expected and a positive showing by the Vikes. The last score I saw was 27-5 for Burnaby and they looked like they were going to put a whoopin on the visitors. Vikes finished with a flurry and scored three times to gain two bonus points. If the Vikes can figure out how to bottle that last 20 minutes there still could be playoff hopes for the program that hasn’t won since November. It doesn’t get easier for them however as next weekend they have two teams entered into the University 7s PLUS a game against James Bay. Burnaby will be worrying about how they lost their focus in a game that looked a comfortable win. Look forward to the match report on this one.

Canada Finish 3rd at Brazil 7s: Defeat Spain and Brazil; Lose to NZ on Day 2

posted Feb 23 2014

Canada got a chance to set the record straight with Spain after allowing the Europeans to wipe out a 19-0 deficit and claim a win on Day 1. On Day 2 it was a different story as Canada kept their foot to the floor and cruised to a 22-0 victory. They then had a heartbreaking loss to NZ, a game they were winning until the final seconds and settled for 3rd with a comprehensive win over England.
